Antiferromagnetic correlations and impurity broadening of NMR linewidths in cuprate superconductors

چکیده
We study a model of a d-wave superconductor with strong potential scatterers in the presence of antiferromagnetic correlations and apply it to experimental nuclear magnetic resonance NMR results on Zn impurities in the superconducting state of YBa2Cu3O7− . We then focus on the contribution of impurity-induced paramagnetic moments, with Hubbard correlations in the host system accounted for in Hartree approximation. We show that local magnetism around individual impurities broadens the line, but quasiparticle interference between impurity states plays an important role in smearing out impurity satellite peaks. The model, together with estimates of vortex lattice effects, provides a semiquantitative description of the impurity concentration dependence of the NMR line shape in the superconducting state, and gives a qualitative description of the temperature dependence of the line asymmetry. We argue that impurity-induced paramagnetism and resonant local density of states effects are both necessary to explain existing experiments.

Spectroscopic Studies of Quasiparticle Low-Energy Excitations in Cuprate and Iron-Based High-Temperature Superconductors
Recent development in the physics of high-temperature superconductivity is reviewed, with special emphasis on the studies of the low-energy excitations of cuprate and iron-based superconductors. For cuprate superconductors, a phenomenology based on coexisting competing orders with superconductivity in the ground state of these doped Mott insulators is shown to provide a consistent account for a...
متن کاملAnomalous Temperature Dependence of Spin Susceptibility around a Nonmagnetic Impurity in High-Tc Cuprate Superconductors
Local magnetic properties around a nonmagnetic impurity are investigated in high-Tc cuprate superconductors. We consider a model two-dimensional dx2−y2-wave superconductor with strong antiferromagnetic (AF) spin fluctuations and calculate the spin susceptibility around the impurity. We show that the uniform susceptibility (χ(0)), which is usually suppressed in spin-singlet superconductivity, is...

Using model calculations of a disordered d-wave superconductor with on-site Hubbard repulsion, we show how dopant disorder can stabilize novel states with antiferromagnetic order. We find that the critical strength of correlations or impurity potential necessary to create an ordered magnetic state in the presence of finite disorder is reduced compared to that required to create a single isolate...
متن کاملQuantal phases, disorder effects, and superconductivity in spin-Peierls systems.
In view of recent developments in the investigation on cuprate high- T(c) superconductors and the spin-Peierls compound CuGeO3, we study the effect of dilute impurity doping on the spin-Peierls state in quasi-one-dimensional systems. We identify a common origin for the emergence of antiferromagnetic order upon the introduction of static vacancies and superconductivity for mobile holes.
متن کاملModulated spin and charge densities in cuprate superconductors
It is well known that the parent compounds of the cuprate superconductors are antiferromagnetic insulators. When holes are doped into the ubiquitous CuO2 planes, antiferromagnetic spin correlations survive and coexist with superconductivity. The nature of the magnetic correlations in the superconducting phases has been the subject of continuing controversy. The presence of the dynamical antifer...
